2021 Twenty Hundred Club - Bridge Fiasco Race
Raced in the Twenty Hundred Club’s Bridge Fiasco Race on May 22, 2021. ~28miles under the Jamestown, Newport and Mt. Hope Bridges on Narragansett Bay.
Fun event. A bit different than the 2-tenths of a mile legs we did at Charleston Race Week,
Great Crew - Wyatt Pike, Erik Pike, Kristi Chesher, Heather Shaver, Pete Colby & Buster Pike! 4 Rhody Rams on board!
Bit of a knucklhead maneuver approaching Dyer Island off of NEB with the IC37 Gamecock. Should have jibed inside as opposed to flailed and broached behind them.
Additionally, while we were definitely thinking about where to be coming back to the finish line from Mt. Hope Bridge, we did not pick the correct side. Doing it again, we’d hug the Aquidneck Island side of the East Passage instead of the Prudence side. It was hard to get close enough/shallow enough on the Prudence side to clear the flooding tide. Current was RIPPING at the green can off of Sandy Pt (but nothing like Charleston!).
Our course was Start south of Prudence, Jamestown Bridge, Newport Bridge, Mt. Hope Bridge & Finish south of Prudence. Seemed like the right course for a flooding tide all day.
We saw some 16+ knots of wind on the upwinds, Downwinds was a bit lighter, top speeds with the A2 kite up around 10 knots. Little bit more breeze and the boat would have taken off.
Finished 6 out of 7 in our division. Definitely had a hard time keeping up while sailing upwind or 2 sail reaching against the bigger boats. Some good gains downwind, but not enough. https://twentyhundredclub.org/results/?race=3Bridge.
No question, would do the race again!
Great test drive in Rhode Island before Block Island Race Week 2021!
